About garage door panels in Australia

Most Australian homes have sectional garage doors — typically 4–5 horizontal panels that fold up into the ceiling on rollers. The panels are almost always Colorbond steel, which handles our climate well but isn't immune to vehicle impact, hail, or coastal rust. B&D Panelift and Gliderol are the most common systems; Steel-Line, Eastral, and Danestyle make up most of the rest.

The good news is that individual panels on most current-production doors can be sourced and swapped without touching the frame, tracks, or spring system. It's a much cheaper fix than a full door replacement when only one or two sections are damaged.

Common panel damage

  • Vehicle impact — reversing into the door; usually damages the bottom section
  • Hail damage — small dents across one or more sections; common in QLD, NSW, and VIC storm seasons
  • Rust and corrosion — starts at cut edges, scratches, or fastener holes; accelerated in coastal areas
  • Warping — rare on Colorbond steel, more common on older aluminium panels in extreme heat
  • Cracked or split panels — usually from significant impact or panel failure on older fibreglass doors
  • Cosmetic damage — fading, paint chips, or graffiti affecting kerb appeal

What we do

  1. Assess the damage and determine whether repair or replacement is the better option
  2. Identify the door model, panel profile, and Colorbond colour code
  3. Source the replacement panel — either from stock or by order
  4. Remove the damaged section without disturbing adjacent panels or the door hardware
  5. Fit and secure the new panel, check alignment across all sections
  6. Test operation — the door should run smoothly and seal correctly at the bottom

What it costs

Single section replacement: $220–$350 for a standard single-car-width panel in a current Colorbond colour. Double-door-width sections: $300–$450. If 3 or more sections are damaged, a full door replacement may be more cost-effective — we'll do the comparison and let you choose.

Discontinued door models or custom colours may require a custom-order panel, which adds cost and lead time. If you have an older door and can't get an exact match, we'll discuss upgrade options.

A recent job

Karen in Frankston reversed her Mazda into the garage door — not hard, but enough to crease the bottom section of her B&D Panelift. The panel was Colorbond Basalt, which is still in production. We had the replacement section on the van the following Tuesday. Pulled the old section, fitted the new one, re-hung the bottom seal. Total job: 55 minutes. Karen got an itemised quote from us for her insurance claim and ended up paying just the excess.

Frequently asked questions

Can a single panel be replaced, or do I need a new door?

Single panel replacement is possible if the panel is still in production and we can match the colour and profile. Most B&D, Gliderol, and Steel-Line panels from the last 15 years are still available. If your door is older or a discontinued model, full replacement is often more practical — and we'll tell you that honestly rather than doing a patch job that looks mismatched.

My door has a dent — can it be straightened?

Minor dents (less than about 10cm across, no crease in the metal) can sometimes be pulled out using a dent repair technique. Deeper dents or creases — usually from a car reversing into the door — typically need a panel replacement, because the Colorbond steel holds its deformed shape once creased. We'll assess on-site and tell you before we start any work.

How do you match the colour of an existing panel?

Colorbond steel uses standardised colour codes (e.g. Basalt, Surfmist, Monument) that manufacturers replicate across production runs. If your door is less than 10 years old, we can usually source a very close match. Older panels may have faded, making a new panel slightly brighter than the surrounding ones. We'll show you the difference before ordering.

Will my insurance cover a damaged garage door panel?

Most home and contents policies cover accidental damage and storm damage to garage door panels. Vehicle impact by the homeowner is sometimes excluded or subject to an excess. Check your PDS, and we can provide an itemised quote for your claim if needed.

How long does panel replacement take?

If we have the panel in stock, a single section replacement takes 45–90 minutes on-site. For panels that need to be ordered, allow 3–7 business days for standard Colorbond colours. We'll call you as soon as the panel arrives.
