Garage Door Cable Repair Across Australia

Frayed, Snapped or Off-Drum Cables — Same Day

Quick summary

Garage door cables fail from wear, corrosion, or spring failure — and coastal properties see cable damage 2–3 times faster than inland homes. We replace cables on all major AU door brands same day. Typical cost: $180–$320, including both sides. Most jobs done in under 75 minutes.

What garage door cables do

Cables are the link between the spring and the door. The torsion spring stores energy when the door closes; when you open it, the spring releases that energy through the cables and drums to lift the door. A standard 2.4m-wide sectional door uses two cables — one at each bottom corner, running up to drums on the shaft. If one fails, the door drops on that side. If both fail, nothing moves.

Cable damage usually happens in one of three ways: gradual fraying from wear and corrosion, sudden snapping when a spring breaks and releases uneven tension, or the cable jumping off the drum — common when a spring has been weakening and the door isn't sitting level.

Signs you need cable repair

  • Door sits crooked or one side is lower than the other
  • Visible fraying, rust, or broken strands on the cable
  • Cable hanging loose or coiled on the floor
  • Grinding or scraping noise from one side during operation
  • Door won't open, or opens unevenly
  • Cable has come off the drum (looks like a loop hanging near the bottom of the door)

Salt air is the main culprit for early cable failure in coastal areas. Suburbs like Manly, Cronulla, Fremantle, and Glenelg see cables corrode from the outside in — sometimes within 4–5 years on unprotected steel. If you're near the coast and your door is more than five years old, it's worth a quick inspection.

What we do

  1. Inspect both cables, drums, pulleys, and the spring — a cable failure is often secondary to another issue
  2. Release spring tension safely before any cable work — this is where DIY cable repair gets people hurt
  3. Remove both cables and inspect drum grooves for wear
  4. Wind new cables onto the drums and re-thread through pulleys
  5. Re-tension the spring and test balance — the door should hold position when stopped at mid-travel
  6. Lubricate cables and rollers, and let you know if anything else needs attention

What it costs

Standard cable replacement (both sides): $180–$280. If the drums are worn or the bearings need replacing, add $60–120. Coastal-grade stainless cables (longer-lasting in salt air environments): add $40–60 and usually worth it within 5 km of the ocean.

If the spring also needs replacing — common when the cable snapped because the spring failed — that's quoted separately. We'll tell you the full picture before we start any work.

A recent job

Sandra in Manly noticed her Merlin door was shuddering slightly on the left side every morning — not a big deal, just enough to notice. She booked it in for the following Saturday rather than leaving it. Good call. When we looked, the left cable had maybe 30% of its original strands intact — the rest had corroded and snapped off individually over about two years of salt air. The right cable wasn't much better. Both replaced, drums inspected, spring lubricated. Would've been a Sunday emergency call within a month if she'd left it.

Frequently asked questions

What does a garage door cable do?

The cables run from the bottom corners of the door up to drums mounted on the torsion spring shaft. They transfer the spring's stored energy to lift the door. Without working cables, the spring tension can't reach the door — the door won't move, or one side will drop while the other rises.

How do I know if my cable is broken or frayed?

A broken cable is obvious: the door drops on one side or sits lopsided. Fraying is harder to spot — look for small broken strands on the cable, rust staining on the cable or drum, or a slight shudder when the door moves. If your door is making a grinding or scraping sound on one side, that's often a frayed cable starting to unravel.

Can I use my garage door with a broken cable?

No. A door with a broken or detached cable is unbalanced and can fall without warning. The opener is also likely to be overloaded trying to compensate. Disconnect the opener and don't use the door until it's repaired.

How long does cable replacement take?

Most cable replacements take 45–75 minutes. We always replace cables in pairs — one side wearing faster than the other usually means both are overdue. If the drums or bearings also need attention, allow up to 90 minutes.

How often should garage door cables be inspected?

Once a year is a good baseline. Coastal properties — Manly, Fremantle, Glenelg, anywhere within a few kilometres of the ocean — should inspect every six months. Salt air causes cable strands to corrode from the outside in, and fraying can appear quickly after the surface coating is compromised.
