New garage door installation in Australia

Most Australian homes were built with either a tilt-door (the single panel that swings out and up) or a sectional door (horizontal panels that fold up into the ceiling). Tilt-doors are increasingly being replaced with sectional — they're safer, more space-efficient, and work with modern automatic openers. Sectional doors from B&D, Gliderol, and Steel-Line are the standard choice and well-suited to our climate.

Colorbond steel is the default panel material: it handles UV, heat, and coastal salt air better than aluminium or timber, and comes in the full Colorbond palette so it can match your home's exterior. Insulated panels are available and worth considering for garages in WA and QLD, where an uninsulated space can hit 50°C in summer.

Our installation process

  1. Measure and quote — we visit your property, measure the opening, and confirm the structural header is suitable
  2. Select your door — choose panel style, colour, insulation level, and any window inserts
  3. Order and schedule — standard Colorbond colours: 3–5 business days; custom or non-standard: 2–3 weeks
  4. Remove the old door — including the existing spring, cables, tracks, and opener if being replaced
  5. Install the new door — tracks, springs, cables, panels, bottom seal, and struts
  6. Wire and program the opener — travel limits, force settings, sensor alignment, remote programming
  7. Test and handover — full operation test, balance check, walk-through on how to use and maintain the door

What it costs

Single door (2400 × 2100mm), standard Colorbond colour, no opener: $1,100–$1,500. Double door (4800 × 2100mm): $1,600–$2,200. Adding a chain-drive opener: $350–$450. Belt-drive opener upgrade: $500–$650. Custom colours, non-standard sizes, or heritage-style panel profiles: additional $150–$400.

Insulated panels (recommended for WA and QLD) add $200–$400 depending on R-value. For double-brick older homes — common in Adelaide, Melbourne inner suburbs, and parts of Sydney — a timber or steel header reinforcement may be needed, which we'll quote separately after the site visit.

A recent job

Wayne in Salisbury had a 1972 tilt-door that had been manually operated for the last six years — the old opener had died and he'd just been pulling the cable. He wanted a full upgrade. We removed the tilt-door and its old spring system, fitted a Gliderol sectional in Colorbond Surfmist (matched his fascia), and installed an ATA GDO-10 chain-drive opener with two remotes and a keypad. His double-brick header needed a steel lintel — we sorted that the same day. Whole job from 8am to 2:30pm. First time in six years he's been able to open his garage from the car.

Frequently asked questions

What garage door brands do you install?

We install B&D, Gliderol, Steel-Line, and Colorbond sectional doors — the main brands available in the Australian market. We also work with ATA and Merlin openers. If you have a preference, we'll work with that; if not, we'll recommend based on your door size, usage, and budget.

How long does a new garage door installation take?

A standard single-car door removal and replacement takes about 3–4 hours. A double door takes 4–6 hours. If the header or structural framing needs work, allow more. We typically schedule installations as a half-day job so there's no rushing.

Do I need a new opener when I get a new door?

Not necessarily. If your existing opener is less than 10 years old and in good working order, it can usually drive a new door of similar weight. We'll assess before recommending a replacement. If you're upgrading from a tilt-door to a sectional, the opener always needs to change — the drive systems are different.

What size garage door do I need?

Standard Australian single garage openings are 2400mm wide × 2100mm high. Doubles are typically 4800mm × 2100mm. Some older homes have non-standard openings — double-brick 1970s homes in Adelaide and Melbourne especially. We measure before ordering anything, so there are no surprises on installation day.

How much does it cost to supply and install a new garage door in Australia?

Single door (supply + install): $1,100–$1,800 for a standard Colorbond sectional. Double door: $1,600–$2,800 depending on panel style, insulation, and colour. Adding a new opener: $350–$600. Custom colours or non-standard sizes will add to those figures. We provide itemised quotes.

Do I need council approval to replace a garage door?

In most cases, no — a like-for-like replacement doesn't require planning approval. If you're changing the size of the opening, altering a heritage-listed property, or in a heritage overlay area (common in inner Melbourne, Adelaide, and parts of Sydney), check with your council first. We can advise based on your postcode and what you're planning.
