Automatic gates in Australia

Automatic gates are common on residential properties across Australia — particularly in QLD and WA new estates, inner-city Melbourne townhouses, and Sydney acreage properties. The two most common setups are swing gates (one or two leaves that open inward or outward on hinges) and sliding gates (a single panel that rolls along a track). Both use electric motors with control boards, safety sensors, and optional intercom or video entry systems.

ATA and Centurion are the dominant AU residential brands. BFT and CAME are common in commercial and body corporate settings. Each brand has its own control board logic, remote protocol, and failure patterns.

Common gate motor problems

  • Gate won't open or close — motor failure, tripped breaker, or dead backup battery
  • Gate opens but doesn't close automatically — photocell (safety beam) fault or timer setting
  • Gate is slow or straining — motor nearing end of life, gate binding on a post, or worn drive arm
  • Remote has no range — antenna fault, interference, or remote battery
  • Gate drifts open or doesn't hold position — limit switch drift or mechanical brake failure
  • Intercom or video entry not working — wiring fault, module failure, or power supply issue
  • Gate makes grinding noise — worn gearbox or debris in the sliding track

Heavy rain is the most common trigger for gate motor failure in Queensland and northern NSW. Water ingress into the motor housing or control board causes corrosion and electrical shorts. If your motor stopped working after a storm, that's likely what happened.

What we do

  1. Diagnose the fault — control board, motor, limit switch, photocell, or access system
  2. Quote the repair before any work starts
  3. Replace the failed component — we carry common boards, motors, and limit switches for ATA and Centurion
  4. Reprogram travel limits and auto-close timers after any motor or board replacement
  5. Re-program remotes and keypads
  6. Test photocell safety beam (auto-reverse on obstruction) — required for compliance
  7. Advise on drainage improvements or weatherproofing if flooding caused the failure

What it costs

Control board replacement: $200–$400. Motor replacement (existing housing): $350–$600. Full motor unit replacement (supply + install, single swing): $900–$1,400. Intercom or access control repair: $150–$400 depending on fault. Sliding gate motor replacement: $1,100–$1,800.

Remote re-programming only: $80–$120. If you just need remotes reprogrammed after a power outage or board reset, that's a short job.

A recent job

Paul in Redcliffe had a Centurion D5-EVO on a double swing gate that stopped working the morning after a heavy subtropical storm. The motor itself was fine — a water channel near the post had directed runoff directly into the control board housing during the night. The board was cooked. We replaced the board, re-programmed the travel limits and both remotes, and fitted a weatherproof shroud over the housing to prevent a repeat. Paul also asked about adding a video intercom — we ran the wiring at the same time since we were already at the post. Whole job: one visit, about three hours.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my automatic gate open or close?

The most common causes are: motor failure (often from moisture ingress in the housing), a tripped internal circuit breaker (reset it in the motor control board), a dead backup battery after a power outage, or a limit switch that's drifted out of position. On ATA and Centurion gates, a flashing LED on the control board usually indicates an error code — we can decode that over the phone to narrow things down before we arrive.

Which gate motor brands do you service?

ATA, Centurion, BFT, CAME, and Doorhan are the main brands we see in Australia. ATA and Centurion dominate residential installs; BFT and CAME are more common in commercial and strata settings. We carry parts for all four.

How long do automatic gate motors last?

A well-maintained residential gate motor — ATA or Centurion — typically lasts 10–15 years. Exposed coastal installations or motors that flood in heavy rain will fail faster. The control board electronics often give out before the mechanical parts. If your motor is over 12 years old and the control board has failed, a full replacement is usually more economical than sourcing parts for a discontinued unit.

Can my existing gate be converted to automatic?

Usually yes, as long as the gate structure is sound and the gate doesn't bind or scrape when operated manually. We assess the gate weight, swing/slide distance, and post condition before recommending a motor. A single swing gate conversion (supply and install): $900–$1,600. Double swing gates: $1,400–$2,400. Sliding gate: $1,100–$1,800 depending on gate weight.

Is my gate motor covered by warranty?

ATA and Centurion typically offer 2–3 year warranties on new units. Warranty claims require the fault to be a manufacturing defect — damage from flooding, impact, or incorrect installation isn't covered. If your motor failed within the warranty period, we can advise on the claim process.
